Why Me?

Lying lazily sprawled out in the Byson's sattle he stretched out further without consideration with a large yawn. Then curling up he mummbled, "Are we almost there Aang? We've been up here for days..." Then sitting up, deciding that he really couldn't sleep, took out the small sack which usually held food but when he overturned it only crumbs came out, which Momo happily helped himself too. "And we're out of food..." Crawling up next to Aang he looked downward to see if he could see any land.

Nothing.

Then slinking back next to Katara made a general statement, "I'm hungry..."

"Not yet." came the response as Aang looked out to see if any land was nearby; unfortunately, it wasn't. "It might take us a while before we spot anything."

The Avatar was silent for a moment before a smile crossed his face. "Hey! Should I play us something to pass the time?" Aang pulled out his flute from his bag to prove his point.

In one corner of the saddle, Toph sat with her knees drawn up to her chest, her arms loosely fitted around them and her head resting on her knees. Her 'gaze' never left the bottom of the saddle as Aang propsed he play a few tunes on his flute to pass the time. She shrugged.

"Anything's better than Sokka's whining. I have no objections, Aang."

"Thanks, Toph!" Before Sokka could even raise a hand and continue with his 'whining,' Aang pressed his lips to the flute and played three melodic tunes.

The first one was soft and slow, and reminded the Airbender of his past. The second one was a bit faster, and reminded him of his current duty as the Avatar. The last one was slow like the first, but it reminded Aang that he wasn't alone in his task; he had his friends to help him out.

"Sokka you just bought food at the last village-with ALOT of our money...you didn't really eat all of that right?" The expression of irritation would be easily recognized among her companions aside from the latest addition Toph. Katara stared at her brother dully, the trip had been long and boring for EVERYONE she really didn't need him complaining about something new.

Ten minutes ago he'd complained about what was it? Oh, yes they were flying to high and the fire nation would spot them. The ringlet-girl raised her hand in alignment to her friends. "I think that's a great idea Aang."

She smiled over to him as he began to play, the soft hymn somewhat familar as she closed her eyes taking in the peaceful sounds-even her annoyance with her brother seemed to be less important now. When he finished the last verse she gave a playful grin to twelve year old.

"Maybe one of your past lives were a side musician."

"Not yet. It might take us a while before we spot anything."

He gave a long drawn out sigh at that.

"Sokka you just bought food at the last village-with ALOT of our money...you didn't really eat all of that right?"

He looked up and whistled, "I didn't eat anything. It was Momo..." At that the little lemur's ears perked and gave a little chirp before cuddling up on his lap. What the hell?... Oh well, at least it wasn't Aapa sneezing all over him.

This really sucks, it's so boring, as all he thought before he saw that smile on the Avatar's face, usualy meant trouble for him.

"Hey! Should I play us something to pass the time?"

"Anything's better than Sokka's whining. I have no objections, Aang."

"HEY--!"

"Thanks, Toph!"

"I think that's a great idea Aang."

Sokka pouted as they all ganged up on him. He did NOT whine. He crossed his arms across his chest and leaned back with a huff as Aang began to play that flute.

It was actually really pretty... he'd never say that out loud though. "Maybe one of your past lives were a side musician."

And then Sokka chimed in, "And maybe one was a chef? Can you cook Aang cuz seriously, we're going to starve if we don't stop somewhere." Well, even if he did whine he did it for the good of everyone. Otherwise Katara would starve herself in the quest for the Avatar taking head, Aang would get all... moody and crap and Toph couldn't even see or care! He was the voice of reason. The realist. He prided himself on that.

"Sokka you just bought food at the last village-with ALOT of our money...you didn't really eat all of that right?"

OH. Score for the Waterbender. Toph smiled to herself, silently cheering Katara on for that statement of truth.

"I didn't eat anything. It was Momo..."

And then she sighed. Sure, blame it on the lemur. She hadn't traveled with the gang for very long, but already there were times when she was glad she was unable to see ... she certainly wouldn't want to look at Sokka's face when he complained.

"I think that's a great idea Aang."

"HEY--!"

Toph grinned. Hey, he was complaining. Serves him right.

"Maybe one of your past lives were a side musician."

She nodded in agreement.

"And maybe one was a chef? Can you cook Aang cuz seriously, we're going to starve if we don't stop somewhere."

Add another sigh to that. "Sokka, you're hopeless, really."

"Sokka, you're hopeless, really."

Aang laughed lightly at Toph's comment while putting his flute away. "Don't worry, Sokka-we aren't too far from land."

"Sokka, you're hopeless, really."

Sokka made faces in front of Toph specifically knowing that she couldn't see. Some say it would be cruel, but come on, this was Sokka.

"Don't worry, Sokka-we aren't too far from land."

Sokka crawled over to the top of Aapa's head. And looked down, "Look!" He pointed nearly hitting Aang's balled head, "LAND!" His mouth was practically watering at the prospect of food. "And look at all the nice earth. You could... practice earthbending?" He said persuasivly, though he knew Toph would be glad there was something she could put her feet on. Since that's how she saw... or something to that affect.

"Look! LAND!" Aang's eyes widened when he came to the sudden realization that he could've been underwater and still would've heard Sokka's exclamation, no matter how close he was to him.

"And look at all the nice earth. You could... practice earthbending?" Aang laughed once more while gripping hold of the reins and motioning Appa to fly down. "Okay, but if it turns out this island is inhabited by the Fire Nation, Katara and Toph are gonna blame you, Sokka. After all, you are the plan guy."

"And look at all the nice earth. You could... practice earthbending?"

Toph brightened slightly at the prospect of stable land.

"Finally!" she proclaimed, a smile appearing on her face for the first time in ... how long was it since they were last on land? Toph couldn't say for sure about anyone else, but she, for one, could definitely say that she liked being in control of her own footsteps .. and the only way she could be was on stable land.

Oh yeah, not to mention she could get back to torturing teaching Aang Earthbending. That was always a plus.

"Okay, but if it turns out this island is inhabited by the Fire Nation, Katara and Toph are gonna blame you, Sokka. After all, you are the plan guy."

.... Oh, yeah, That's right. Toph returned to her usual neutrality and leaned back against the side of the saddle.

"What a lucky guy Sokka is. Not only will he have one girl blaming him, he'll have two. That's the deal of a lifetime," She muttered, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Is that your intuition speaking again?" The ringle-girl gave her brother a curt look, her pride would never let her agree with him-one because he was always 96 % wrong and two well it was just a sibling thing. Katara glanced over Appa's fur to the land below perking a buit at Toph's excitement and Aang's teasing. "It'll be all your fault." She agreed against her older brother but did let a smile show.

"Still, I can't wait to get my feet back in the water."

Sokka returned her curt look for a cynical one. "Pfft..." He pouted not being able to think of anything to say back he leaned back and relaxed. Momo curling onto his stomach, Momo seemed to like sleeping on Sokka for reason. He vaugley wondered why... Sokka just wanted some food really badly.

He hoped though... to himself... that there weren't any fire bender's down there.

Zuko shuddered, but did nothing to warm himself further. He hated the cold as it bit at his already pink cheeks. He just couldn't wait until they found shelter somewhere and get out of this wind. He looked back at Iroh through narrowed eyes. How can he be unaffected...!? He grunted, eyes just barely grazing the sky before he caught sight of something.

He stopped to examine it better.
"What the...?"

Iroh stood off to the side watching his nephew prove his stubbornness by nearly freezing himself. He knew he would never understand that boy, but Zuko was the closest thing to family he may ever have again. He hoped land was near for the sake of the crew, or that something happened to take everyone's mind off the wind. At Zuko's words he followed his line of vision, seeing a speck in the sky.

“We should head for land, Prince Zuko. We will have better luck searching for the Avatar when it is warmer.”

Zuko didn't move, eyes never wavering. Its heading towards land... He thought. Even though the logical side of his brain was saying it was just a bird, his gut was telling him to follow it.

"Follow that, that...thing." Whatever it was. Life right now had been really boring. Even he couldn't deny the fact that fighting the Avatar was enticing in its own weird way. It was better than sitting around doing nothing but watch his Uncle drink tea all day...

"Okay, everyone-hang on!"

As Appa got even closer to land, and hopefully a village, Aang's thoughts turned toward what the monks, and a number of others, called his destiny-to defeat the Fire Nation by fighting Fire Lord Ozai. And now Aang knew that he had to accomplish this task before the return of Sozen's comet, otherwise even he wouldn't be able to bring down the Fire Nation.

To accomplish his task, he was supposed to learn the other elements; he was well on his way to mastering water, made significant progress with earth and vowed never to Firebend again after what he'd done to Katara. Aang only hoped that when he was ready, he could take on the Fire Lord with only three out of the four elements and win.

"Okay, everyone-hang on!"

Toph knew better than to disobey that suggestion; her fingers found the most stable surface of the saddle and clung onto it for dear life. This was probably the worst part of riding on Appa ... the landing. While the ride itself was usually smooth, the landing always somehow made her feel like she was going to be sick.

Nothing a little bit of land couldn't cure.

Toph closed her eyes and willed herself to focus on something other than Appa's landing. Aang .. he had made quite a bit of progress with his earthbending; though she admitted it was a bit of a rocky start (pun definitely intended), since he had learned what he needed to be like in order to actually perform the task of earthbending, it had been pretty much smooth sailing. Soon, he would completely master the craft.

Needless to say, Toph was proud of her pupil (though she'd never voice that out loud) ... though the thought of his impending graduation from her teachings left her to wonder what would happen to her once he was through? Would he need her anymore? Would anyone need her anymore?

This insane group of perfect strangers that she had happened to fatedly meet ... they were her family now. And in the back of her mind, she knew that she hoped it would stay this way for quite a long time.

It would only be so long until the Avatar defeated the Fire Lord, though ...
